Visit A Park: National Park Centennial
Did you know that the United States National Park System (NPS) is celebrating its 100th birthday on August 25? And did you know that there are 12 awesome national parks to visit in and near D.C.?
There’s no better way to celebrate this historic occasion than by visiting a national park! It’s an excellent time of year to take a hike, go bird watching, have a picnic, or enjoy other outdoorsy activities at one of D.C.’s beautiful park reserves. Pick a date and pack a lunch — and check the NPS calendar for special centennial events!
15th Annual Page to Stage Festival
Do you love stage performances, plays, and musicals? If so, you definitely need to attend the 15th Annual Page to Stage Festival at the Kennedy Center. This three-day event gives audiences a sneak peek at upcoming works that will premier in the 2016-2017 season. During this jam-packed festival, the Kennedy Center hosts over 40 D.C.-based theater companies in a lively series of open rehearsals and free readings.
Page to Stage runs from Saturday, September 3 to Monday, September 5. This is also a wonderful experience for theater and acting students!
ICEBERGS
ICEBERGS is a one-of-a-kind exhibit being featured at the National Building Museum (in the Great Hall). The display features a breathtaking, fantastical glacial sea designed by some of the world’s most creative landscape architects. Visitors can interact with the display, ascending to viewing areas inside the tallest iceberg, sliding down chutes, and navigating an “undersea bridge.” Served alongside the exhibit are kakigori samples (Japanese shaved ice).
For more fun, hang around later on Wednesday nights for the Museum’s “Late Nights” festivities, which feature live music, food, and adult beverages. The ICEBERGS exhibit runs through September 5.
Labor Day Festivities
Labor Day is Monday, September 5. Looking for cool things to do for the long weekend? Try one of these:
- Free Concert at the U.S. Capitol: Attend a free concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on the Sunday before Labor Day (September 4). The National Symphony Orchestra will be performing American songbook standards and patriotic favorites. The event ushers in the beginning of Washington D.C.’s performing arts season. Concert starts at 8 p.m.; gates open at 3 p.m.
- 28th Annual D.C. Blues Festival: Watch your favorite musicians jam it out live on Saturday, September 3 at the Carter Barron Amphitheater (16th Street & Colorado Avenue, NW). This year’s lineup includes Lauren Mitchell, Slam Allen, Jackie Scott & the Housewreckers, and more!
