Best Hiking Trails near 5333 Connecticut
Many people associate D.C. with urban buildings, bustling political activity, and diplomatic embassies. While this is a major aspect of DC life, many are surprised with the way that D.C. pleasantly intertwines with its lush natural surroundings. There are many hidden trails, nature parks, and natural conservancies that provide a beautiful nature framework for D.C. These are great for hiking, nature strolls, biking, running, or simply being outdoors in the fresh air.
In mid-March, the weather is predicted to warm up a bit in DC. This month will be a great time to break out your hiking gear and get ready for some brisk spring hikes. Here are a few spots to explore near 5333 Connecticut Ave.
Rock Creek Park
Rock Creek Park is D.C.’s most expansive hiking park. Comprised of over 2000 acres, the property is protected and managed by the National Parks and Services (NPS) department. It is full of some of DC’s most beautiful and exciting hiking trails that wind through the woods and near streams.
A great way to begin exploring the picturesque park is to have a go at their half-day hikes. These include the the Milkhouse Ford Hike (1.75 miles), Rapids Bridge Hike (2 miles), and Boulder Ridge Hike (3.5 miles). These trails lead you through truly historic DC nature spots that people have been traversing for centuries.
Glover Archbold Trail
In addition to the main Rock Creek Park area, there are several “finger” parks that branch off of Rock Creek and lead you in and out of the area. One such park is the Glover Archbold Trail. Beautiful, quiet, and serene, this is great place to get a nice hike in. The trail can get somewhat rocky, so it’s probably more suitable for a walking hike or a Sunday morning stroll, rather than a run. There’s also a loop that you can use to track your exercise and progress goals. The park is beautifully maintained and is listed as a U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Melvin C. Hazen Park
Hazen is another small “tributary” trail that leads into Rock Creek Park. It’s somewhat hidden in an urban area, but that’s part of the charm of historic DC—one minute you’re walking the concrete jungle, and then all of a sudden you can find yourself surrounded by lush greenery and invigorating woodlands. This is a great way to begin a trek into the greater Rock Creek Park areas.
Soapstone Valley Park
Soapstone Valley Trail is an absolute hiking gem and another of the more quiet trails used mostly by locals. The trailhead begins on Albemarle St. NW, about a block east from the Connecticut Ave. intersection. The trail meanders down near a small creek tributary of Broad Branch, continues into greener and more densely wooded areas. It’s not necessarily a level path at all times, which makes for an interesting and boisterous hike. You can connect with other trails from the Soapstone Trail, including Western Ridge Trail.
If you want to get into some consistent hiking, one of the best and safest things to do is to join a hiking club. For instance, Capital Hiking Club organizes hikes year-round and hikes in groups for added safety, instruction, and fun!
Another unique hiking club to check out is Yoga Hikes. They hike up various spots and stretch out for some yoga at various outdoors destinations. Their season usually begins in late spring (May), so check their schedule for meet-up times and dates. Be sure to keep them in mind if you’re looking to spruce up your hike routine.
