Holiday Happenings Close to Home

It’s that time of year again—winter is upon us and the holiday season is in full effect! Looking for some exciting holiday happenings close to home? There are plenty of festivals and events to attend this season in the DC area. You don’t have to travel far at all to find your winter wonderland of choice.

Here’s a handful of suggestions to help you plan a relaxing and entertaining holiday season this year:

Catch a Holiday Show

DC is known for being a hub and prime destination for performing arts. The city abounds with theatre shows, musical performances, plays, and much more. Here are a few noteworthy shows to check out:

  • “A Choral Arts Christmas”– The Choral Arts Chorus and Orchestra puts on their classic Christmas show on Dec. 24. They’ll be performing Christmas standards as well as seasonal favorites. Group discounts are available. Locals call this a time-honored Washington tradition!
  • “An Irish Carol”– Catch Matthew Keenan’s theatrical interpretation of the Dicken’s classic. It’s showing at Keegan Theater now until Dec. 31, 2015.
  • “Stars of David”– Entertaining musical revue adapted from Abigail Pogrebin’s best-selling book.It is a celebration of Jewish public figures based on interviews with famous celebrities, such as Joan Rivers, Leonard Nimoy, and others.

Experience DC’s Famous Zoo Lights Display

Every year, the National Zoo dresses up in over 500,000 lights in celebration of the winter holiday season. Zoo Lights features plenty of food, shopping opportunities, and live music performances. There’s also a special VIP lounge area on Saturdays for Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) card holders. The event is every day except Dec. 24, 25, and 31, and lasts until Jan. 2.

Stop by the Downtown Holiday Market

This event is winding down to a close soon, but if you can make it to downtown DC, be sure to check out the Downtown Holiday Market. Tons of regional artisans and boutique crafters offer displays of jewelry, paintings, and other art items for sale. These make for excellent last minute gifts, decorations, and collector pieces. There will be lots of food and drink as well as entertainment. Located at 8th and F Streets NW; last day is Wednesday, 12/23.

Usher in the New Year with Music

If you’re looking for an intimate New Year’s Eve experience, the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts has a wonderful night of happenings lined up. These include A Jazz New Year’s Eve, a concert by Chaka Khan, and a Grand Foyer Party
